In Person
Picture
From conceptualization to rehearsal, this course is an examination/lecture/discussion of the directing process.  The focus is on the director’s process of reading the script and analyzing. A “how-to-go” from first reading’s gut impression, to recognizing the play you should be directing, to analysis of scripts from the Greeks through Shakespeare to the new Canadian play, to illuminating the thinking of the director and the way to engage and create with fellow theatre artists.

Accessible venue: main floor of the Alumnae Theatre.

Bio:
For 40 some years, Mr. Rose has been a distinguished director in Canadian theatre.  Recently retired as Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, Canada’s leading new play theatre, he was previously the Founding Artistic Director of the highly regarded Necessary Angel Theatre, plus the Director of the Stratford Festival’s Young Company and Associate Director of the Canadian Stage Company.  Awards include 5 Toronto Dora awards for Direction, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Direction and Bitef Festival’s (Belgrade) Audience Choice Award. R.H. THOMSON:

ACTING/Acting's Chaos inside Acting's Order
Saturday, April 16, 23, 30/10am-1pm EDT
In Person

Picture
We will explore acting's contradictions: how to find a character's chaotic condition inside and the theatre's need for order.
Our lines have been pre-written, yet somehow it's better if their delivery appears spontaneous. Our bodies have been blocked, yet somehow it's better if our actions appear random.
Guess what? The solution, for the most part, is just listening. And listening is hard because you can't act it.
So we will explore.

The classes will take place in the Studio Theatre, which is up 3 flights of stairs.

Bio:
R.H. has appeared in film and theatre across Canada, as Matthew Cuthbert in
Anne With An E, in the movie Chloe directed by Atom Egoyan, as Marshall McLuhan in The Message by Jason Sherman and This Was The World by Ellie Moon. As well as being an advocate for the arts, R.H. has worked on many history/arts projects. For the First World War Centenary, he built The World Remembers-Le Monde Se Souvient, an international commemoration exhibit now installed at the Canadian War Museum - theworldremembers.org. He is a Member of the Order of Canada and was awarded the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
A passcode is required to register for R.H. Thomson's Master Class.
